Eagle Scout project provides outdoor park sitting area
With the encouragement of Donna Marquise, one of our talented local garden designers, Joshua Bywaters and fellow scouts from Troop 36, worked all day Sunday to install a liberty elm tree and three benches by the Thornton River (adjacent to the footbridge) at the historic school house,The Link. This is one of Joshua’s Eagle Scout projects which has entailed project design, fundraising and location planning. With the permission of Cliff Miller, owner of the schoolhouse, there is now another tree planted by the river and the only public outdoor park sitting area in Sperryville.
Joshua, a senior at Rappahannock County High School, plans to attend college to study aerospace engineering. His parents are Doug and Athena Bywaters and the family resides in Flint Hill. Thanks to Joshua for making this tree and seating area available, and thanks to Scoutmaster Roger Pearson and all others who supported this project.
EMT training
Free training to become an Emergency Medical Technician for the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad will provide you with the opportunity to both increase your employment options and serve the community.
The same training that was offered earlier this year and has resulted in the initial rebuilding of the rescue squad will again tentatively be available in early 2009. Once the formal training is completed, you will be provided with the supervised experience that will lead you to become a certified EMT and open up doors to employment. In return, you will be asked to volunteer to serve the community for a minimum of two years. You will become part of the dedicated group of skilled people who work together as a team to provide an essential service to our community. Join the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad, or any other Rappahannock squad, to become eligible for this training opportunity.
Other volunteer opportunities with the squad include training to be an ambulance driver, administrative and support work, fundraising and publicity. Bring whatever talents you have to the group and they will be put to good use!
Here's what some current and former squad members are doing: Joshua Waddell, 12-year squad volunteer, is employed as a paramedic at Valley Medical Transport.
Stephani Scott, a dedicated SVRS squad member, is employed by Kaiser Permanente and is completing EMT Intermediate training. Jamie Matthews is employed by Arlington County Fire Department and George Swett, recently retired after 25 years of faithful service from Arlington, is now regular with our squad.
Chris Payne, formerly of Sperryville is employed as a firefighter medic at Quantico. His brother Matt Payne is employed full time at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital and part-time at LIFEEVAC.
Birthdays
Brian Ross celebrated his birthday on Nov. 16. Brian attends Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church. His fellow parishioners wanted us to know that he was nominated to be a Deacon and that he is involved in the creative musical productions at the church. Warm wishes go to Brian from all of us.
Rappahannock’s own WWII veteran and two time Kamikaze survivor is celebrating his 86th birthday. Best wishes to Chilly Raiford who often can be found at Stonewall Abby Café where he recites poetry, reads stories and amazes everyone with his uncanny memory. Happy Birthday Chilly Raiford and we look forward to the publication of your book in the spring.
Old Rag Gallery
Did you know that Joyce Harman, Alex Henze, Ray Boc, Mary Ann Dancisin and Richard Lykes are hanging around 29 Main Street in Sperryville? Literally. Local photographers display their talents on the neutral gray walls of the once Thornton River Fly Shop, now Old Rag Photo Gallery. Come to this gallery on Main Street and see their take on the world around them. Enjoy the view from the deck of the Thornton River and perhaps find the perfect holiday gift with the intention of celebrating the beauty of Rappahannock County.
