RCPS students, teachers attend performance at Kennedy Center
On behalf of the teachers, students, and parent chaperons, Dr. Robert Chappell, Superintendent of the Rappahannock County Public Schools (RCPS), thanks the Chateauville Foundation for its generosity. The foundation offered the schools free tickets to attend "An Evening with Marvin Hamlisch,” the Oct. 10 Castleton Festival Inaugural Benefit Concert, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D. C.
Elementary schoolteachers, Ben Beasley (Director of Bands, Rappahannock County Elementary School (RCES) and Lilo Wolfe (Gifted Education Specialist), organized and led the trip.
About 52 students from the elementary school and high school (grades 5 through 12), accompanied by teachers (among whom was Joy Rollins, RCES music teacher) and chaperons (including Sara Kleppinger) traveled via school bus to the Kennedy Center. They all dressed up for an exciting evening.
When they arrived and walked through the building, everyone was in awe of the sights that they encountered. The Kennedy Center is an extraordinarily beautiful building with spectacular views, both inside and out.
Hannah Bennett of Castleton was one of the students who attended. Here is what she shared:
"It was very beautiful. Also, when it was time to enter the theater, the lights on the ceiling were flashing in rhythm to a little dinging noise. When you go outside on the back deck, you have a great view of the Potomac River. Marvin Hamlisch had an amazing performance when he was playing the piano. It was a great opportunity for everyone who went".
During the performance, Maestro Lorin Maazel also made a special appearance on the violin. Some of the students were able to get autographs from Hamlisch and some of the other performers.
It was “a real treat for all the students and parents who attended,” said Ben Beasley. “We were all so grateful to Chateauville and RCPS for allowing us to attend this concert. Many students and parents expressed interest in attending again, if the offer should ever be extended.”
Festival makes news
It was interesting to see that The Castleton Festival was featured in a small column of the Virginian-Pilot Newspaper on Sept. 24. My sister, Mary Nelson, who lives in Norfolk, was reading her morning paper one day and saw it. She thought it was pretty cool to see that in her paper. She visits Castleton frequently and we sometimes drive by the Maazels in our travels.
The article talks about the annual music festival, that will focus on four Benjamin Britten chamber operas, to be held on the Maazel property in our county. It also states that the festival is scheduled for July 4 – 19, the week after Maestro Maazel's last concert as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic.
