RCHS volleyball falls to defending state champions
Facing a bigger and physically stronger Strasburg team on Tuesday night, the Rappahannock County High School varsity volleyball team made a valiant stand against the defending state champions but eventually lost in four grueling games.
The varsity Panther's powerful serving kept them in the game, but they were consistently defeated at the net and kept out of their "system" by the relentless pounding from Strasburg.
There were some incredibly long volleys back and forth with great recoveries by both teams. The Panther's lost the first game 19-25, but came back and won the second game 25-18 on two wicked serves by No. 11 Laura Caperton that had so much spin you could almost feel the back draft in the stands. However, the whole team served well and hung tough together as a team.
But great serves weren't enough to overcome Strasburg who played with both finesse and power – but mostly power – and who kept the Panthers in a constant state of reacting instead of playing their game. The opposing team made some vicious kills and the Panthers responded with some incredible saves. Ironically, the only weak part of Strasburg's game was its serving which helped to keep the Panthers in the game. The Panthers also had trouble at the net and were unable to set up their own kills consistently.
Despite this, the Panthers continued to stay in the game, and although smaller were able to react with some fantastic athletic moves to keep the ball alive. However, it was not enough and the Panthers lost the final two games 18-25 and 20-25 to bring their record to a still impressive 11-3 for the season. The Panthers next game is at Madison at 7:15 tonight.
