Sheriff's Office swears in J.C. Welch as new investigator

J.C. Welch of Sperryville was sworn in yesterday as the new investigator for the Rappahannock County Sheriff's Office.

Welch, 32, began his career with the RCSO before moving to the Culpeper Town Police where he has worked for the past six years.

Welch earned his bachelor's degree from Radford University in criminal justice. While with the Culpeper police, he worked as a sergeant of patrol and investigations. Last year he campaigned against Connie Compton Smith for sheriff of Rappahannock County.

Welch said he was looking forward to working for Sheriff Smith who he says is doing an excellent job.

"I'm definitely looking forward to working with her," he said, adding "this is the most excited I have ever been about a new job."

The race for Sheriff was a "long time ago," said Welch, and wasn't a consideration in applying for the job.

Welch will report directly to Sheriff Smith and Major Scott Jenkins.

"J.C. is well trained and educated and will be an asset to the Sheriff's Office,” said Smith.

Welch replaces Deputy Tony Sisk who this year became the School Resource Office at the Rappahannock County Public Schools.

Sisk replaced long time Deputy Sheriff and SRO, Capt. Jeff Brown who will retire on Jan. 1.

In other news from the Sheriff's Office, a “gas drive off” was reported on Oct. 11 from the Hillsdale Store on Route 211 just east of Massie's Corner, according to the Sheriff's Office. The store manager called to report that a white Hyundai pumped $47.35 worth of fuel and then left without paying heading east on 211.
